SHAGANAPPI COMMUNITY CREEK ENHANCEMENT PROJECT
The Shaganappi Community Creek Enhancement Project aims to continue the project's restoration activities along this important urban stream in southwest Calgary. Riparian health and function will be improved through the removal of invasive plant species along the creek and extensive planting of live stakes and wattle fences, and planting rooted stock of native shrubs. Education and awareness regarding the importance of riparian areas and the issues which affect riparian health will be improved through engagement of community members during restoration workdays. Workday participants will also be able to gain valuable experience getting their hands dirty putting real restoration techniques into practice. This project will result in decreased cover of invasive species along an important urban riparian area, improved streambank stability and function, reduced erosion along the stream, increased biodiversity of native riparian plants, improved education and awareness, and the formation of new partnerships in conservation and restoration. Changes in biodiversity and invasive species cover will be documented through photography and in future through further riparian health assessments and mapping; changes in education and awareness of participants will be captured through a survey completed by project participants.
