Siksika Housing

Siksika Housing partnered with Form Innovations, a Cochrane-based housing CleanTech startup company which specializes in a new innovative energy-efficient foundation system called Polarblock, to build two new energy-efficient homes at Siksika Nation using the Polarblock system.  Siksika Nation members are not immune to the impacts of higher utility costs and increased greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions that result from inefficient homes. These two new homes will help advance energy-efficient housing at Siksika Nation to ensure future generations live in comfortable, warm and energy-efficient homes that will last for generations.

This project focused on the development of two insulated basements using Polarblock insulation technologies. The primary goal was to reduce energy consumption, lower GHG emissions and create a more comfortable living environment. Other impacts included the stimulation of the local economy and energy savings for businesses.

Siksika Housing wants to make a case for funding more basements of this type in the future within the Siksika Nation or other First Nation communities, including within the Blackfoot Confederacy. In addition, they maintain a relationship with Polarblock and are looking for opportunities to use their technology again in future housing construction.
