Communications Specialist

Reporting to the Communications Director, the Communications Specialist advocates for Alberta Ecotrust and strategically coordinates the organization's communications and marketing efforts.

The Communications Specialist is responsible for the planning, day-to-day management, and design/creation and delivery of communications initiatives. This includes developing communications plans, writing, editing, storytelling, content development, presentations, website maintenance, events, media relations and social media management. 

Working in a highly collaborative environment, the Specialist raises awareness about our programs, thoughtfully shares key policy and knowledge pieces with stakeholders, and generates compelling ways to demonstrate Alberta Ecotrust’s impact and further our goals. 

This position is responsible for:

Strategy and Planning

  • Develop, implement and continuously improve the strategic communications and marketing plans for Alberta Ecotrust’s initiatives. This includes developing key messages in collaboration with the content experts.

  • Develop and implement outreach and events plans as needed.

  • Apply project management skills to ensure objectives are achieved within deadlines and budget.

  • Understand our strategic approaches and impact, and lead the sharing of insights, information, and analysis in meaningful ways for our audiences.

  • Evaluate and track KPIs and perform analytics on communications strategies and channels. Provide regular reports on the status of key communications deliverables.

Content Development and Brand Management

  • Manage the design, content, and production of all communications and marketing materials.

  • Manage the development, writing, editing, and distribution of regular communication to various stakeholders, including social media, email newsletters, event invitations, and annual reports.

  • Manage, update and provide general oversight of the Alberta Ecotrust website and any new sites that might be developed. 

  • Curate consistent use of key messages and brand identity with internal and external stakeholders; train the team on key message use and establish brand identity guidelines.

  • Manage the development and implementation of standard templates for various communication pieces, ensuring consistency of brand, key messages, and style.

  • Manage the creation and updating of presentations and outreach materials (displays, brochures and collateral materials), and annual reports. 

  • Use storytelling skills to raise awareness about the impact of the projects that Alberta Ecotrust leads and/or supports.

  • Manage and monitor social media channels, engaging with target audiences and growing our presence.

Media Relations

  • Oversee media relations activities to enhance Alberta Ecotrust’s recognition and credibility. This includes building relationships with media contacts, issuing news releases, media advisories and media availabilities, pitching stories, responding to requests, and tracking and growing positive media coverage.

  • Identify and build relationships with media influencers and community leaders to enhance the visibility of our initiatives. 

Fund Development and Partnership Development

  • Assist in the development of funding proposals, campaigns, fulfillment reports and other collateral that support the fund development goals of the organization as needed.

  • Establish and ensure effective use and maintenance of marketing lists and client relationship management tools.

  • Identify and coordinate opportunities for the promotion and inclusion of Alberta Ecotrust at significant events.

  • Assist in building positive and effective relationships with the organization’s key stakeholders, including business and community leaders, volunteers, funders and government officials.

Event Support

  • Provide turn-key event management services through internal staff allocations and/or external contracts as necessary. 

  • Develop marketing, outreach, media and partnership strategies for Alberta Ecotrust events.

  • Develop marketing materials for workshops, conferences, and events hosted by Alberta Ecotrust.

  • Coordinate opportunities for the promotion and inclusion of Alberta Ecotrust at significant events.


The successful candidate will possess the following expertise and skills:

  • 5 or more years of experience in communications, marketing and public relations.

  • Post-secondary education in a related field, such as communications, marketing, journalism, or public relations.

  • Proven excellence in writing, editing, storytelling and developing content in a variety of tools. 

  • Proven track record in media relations

  • Working knowledge of graphic design programs with a good eye for design. Video production skills are an asset.

  • Experience organizing events, tradeshows and/or workshops.

  • Experience in email marketing, list segmentation, and client relationship management software.

  • Knowledge of the Alberta environmental sector and interest in communicating environmental issues/content. 

  • Experience with non-profit communications, including fundraising campaigns, funding proposals and impact reporting, is an asset.

  • Software proficiency (including Google Suite, social media channels, website platforms, Google Analytics, Adobe Creative Suite, Canva).

We currently offer a hybrid work arrangement, with a mix of remote, home-based work and a minimum of one day per week of in-person office hours. 

Alberta Ecotrust’s head office is in Calgary, but about half of our team is located in Edmonton. The successful candidate will ideally be located in Edmonton, but Calgary candidates will also be considered.


This is a full-time, 37.5-hour work week with every third Friday as an earned day off. We offer a competitive salary range of $70,000 to $80,000 annually, commensurate with skills and experience, plus paid health benefits, three weeks of vacation, a Christmas break, and a day off for your birthday.

This is a term position that will conclude on March 31, 2027, with an option to renew or transition to a permanent position if additional funding is secured.
