About The Role
We are looking for an experienced and innovative expert in green building science, architecture, construction management or a related field to fill a new role and lead the establishment of an exciting new initiative: the Emissions Neutral Buildings Centre of Excellence (ENBx). In addition, the Program Manager will be responsible in the near term for the development of knowledge products, governance models, the initial budget and stakeholder engagement in an effort to shape the Centre. The Program Manager, Neutral Emission Buildings will report to the Program Director and regularly collaborate with Program Specialists and the Alberta Ecotrust Leadership Team.
As the Centre is established and matures, and in collaboration with the Leadership Team, the Program Manager will be responsible for business development and planning, ongoing budget management, resource allocation/human resources and the establishment of organizational processes necessary to create a leading cross-functional and, inter-disciplinary hub that accelerates emission neutral buildings. This includes the advancement of policy innovation, research, capacity-building, collaboration, market investments in high performance buildings, as well as projects.
About The Opportunity
ENBx is a new development and will serve as a Centre of Excellence for industry that strengthens the public, private, and civic capacities for zero-emissions buildings in Calgary, Edmonton and throughout Alberta. Over the next 12 months, the ENBx will be developed in partnership and collaboration with industry, government, and other key stakeholders. Over the long-term, it is our vision that ENBx will be a catalytic, amplifying member of the Alberta based community of practice that exchanges knowledge of how to decarbonize the building sector.
As a hub for this community of practice, ENBx interconnects a variety of professionals in the building industry and grows capacity through events, resource development, skills training and communications. It is important that the ENBx is not seen as replacing good work in the ecosystem; rather it is seen as a convener and collaborator utilizing the “clearing house” model. It is also envisioned that the ENBx will provide accelerator products and services that are designed to support the building sector in the achievement of a carbon neutral building stock by 2050.
For Alberta Ecotrust, a federal endowment investment of nearly $44 million via the Low Carbon Cities Canada initiative represents a significant expansion of our programmatic offerings. This includes partnerships with the municipal governments in both Calgary and Edmonton. We are looking for someone who is a passionate advocate for climate solutions, green buildings, and industry. Specific responsibilities include:
Advance a holistic view of climate action that seeks innovative and pragmatic approaches to greenhouse gas emissions reductions from buildings, in alignment with our Low Carbon Cities Canada mandate as well as the policy directions outlined by the City of Calgary, City of Edmonton and the Provincial and Federal governments.
Be an honest broker and trusted advisor for industry stakeholders while remaining mission aligned with the policy direction of carbon neutrality by 2050
Develop collaborations, partnerships and work cross-functionally with external agencies, industry, academia and community to develop and align planning, programs, products, services, research, policy development and other actions to Alberta Ecotrust in fulfilling its mandate
Contribute to program and project fundraising/revenue development and the management of various contribution agreements from initiation to reporting
Represent Alberta Ecotrust/ENBx at public events and in programs and initiatives with partners and collaborators
Collaborate with the Alberta Ecotrust Program and Investment Teams to create and/or align programs and financial products and services with the mission and intent of the ENBx
Develop, track and report key performance-related indicators and metrics to assess Centre operations and program effectiveness and impact
Conduct research, benchmarking and analysis and oversee the development of case studies to inform the market
Actively develop capacity building opportunities, celebration, and recognition programs for key stakeholders
As the Centre matures and resources increase, the Manager will develop the services and team required to initiate a Retrofit Accelerator including but not limited to, project origination and aggregation, financing and funding, convening and coordination, capacity building, market development, business case support, strategic procurement and supply chain development, Integrated Project Design, feasibility studies, showcasing, local policy advocacy, project development, impact quantification, quality assurance, research, regulatory advocacy.
You will report directly to the Program Director and will frequently collaborate with the rest of the team at Alberta Ecotrust as you lead our efforts in developing ENBx and a Retrofit Accelerator. Alberta Ecotrust staff work in locations across the province of Alberta, with office spaces available in Calgary and Edmonton. A successful candidate will possess the following qualifications:
Bachelor or Master Degree in Engineering, Architecture, Construction Management or related field from a recognized post-secondary institution or relevant combination of education and experience
Minimum 10 years of experience leading business units/organizations and managing large complex projects and teams. Experience with complex, multi-year programs, networks or collaborative projects, including engagement, planning, design, implementation, and evaluation, directly related to the building sector
In depth knowledge of Building Science and the Codes, Standards, and Policies governing construction in Alberta and specifically in Calgary and Edmonton.
Practical experience in the application of net-zero design and construction principles for Part 3 and/or Part 9 buildings
Well developed professional network within the design and construction field in Alberta
Evidence of financial acumen and understanding of the relevant metrics utilized in business case development in the field of energy, net zero construction, energy efficiency, green buildings, development, transportation, etc.
Energy modeling experience would be considered a significant asset
Experience with project financing would be considered an asset
Past experience developing and/or delivering courses, training workshops, educational seminars, etc. would be considered an asset

A hybrid model is employed at Alberta Ecotrust with flexible office hours combined with remote working. The position is located in either Calgary or Edmonton and relatively frequent travel between Calgary and Edmonton will be required as part of this position.
In Calgary, we have a casual workplace in a heritage building with lots of meeting space, a full kitchen, great access to transit, local restaurants and the downtown core. In Edmonton, we have a co-working space at Beaver House for individual workspaces, meetings, and collaborative spaces when needed. This is a full-time, permanent position, offering a competitive salary for the nonprofit sector (between $90,000 - $110,000, commensurate with experience), benefits package, 35-hour work week, and 3 weeks of vacation to start.
