Justin Thompson spent much of his childhood and youth exploring the foothills, rivers, and mountains of southern Alberta with his family. This clearly influenced his decision to pursue a B.Sc. in Biology and an M.A. in Public Administration, with an eye to influencing change in environmental practices. During his career he spent over a decade working in Canada’s renewable energy industry and has done consulting projects relating to land conservation in southwest Alberta. Justin and his wife also spent a stint as “green” home builders. He has been an active volunteer with several not-for-profit, environmental organizations in both a governance and fundraising capacity.

Justin, who took over as Executive Director of SALTS in the fall of 2014, got to know the organization when he started working with his family and their neighbours to preserve valuable wildlife habitat and watersheds on their own land near Pincher Creek. Justin’s work at SALTS provides him with an opportunity to have a tangible impact on conservation by working directly with landowners who want to protect their property. Justin resides in Calgary with his wife and two young boys. However, they spend much of their free time on their land in the foothills where they are also have a small ranching operation.
