The Métis Urban Housing Corporation (MUHC) and the Métis Capital Housing Corporation (MCHC) provide affordable, adequate and sustainable housing to low and moderate income Aboriginal families within Alberta.

Recently, the Métis Nation of Alberta (MNA) launched a Climate Change Action Plan as a result of the impacts of climate change on the Métis Nation and an expanded focus on climate change on behalf of government bodies. Four major initiatives are part of this plan: renewable energy, environmental monitoring, capacity, and energy efficiency.

As of Fall 2018, both the MUHC and MCHC were approved under the Government of Alberta for the Alberta Indigenous Community Energy Program funding, in partnership with Community Power, who is conducting energy assessment work. Over 400 units are part of the assessment project, many of which are in Edmonton and Calgary. These energy efficiency assessments will formalize their reporting and energy conservation measures. These measures will help build the case for future retrofits to make their buildings more efficient, while lowering greenhouse gas emissions.

The EcoCity Edmonton grant allowed the MUHC to further engage Community Power to host energy efficiency training courses for their staff. Their staff and community learned about home energy consumption, how to better protect homes through weather and climatization efficiently, and in a way that should prolong the lifetime of the housing units. The training increased their awareness about energy efficiency and can open up new employment avenues in future.
