The Grassland Restoration Forum (GRF) promotes the conservation and restoration of native grasslands in Alberta through education, outreach and research to improve reclamation practice and foster stewardship.
Alberta’s threatened prairie ecosystems are rapidly fragmenting and shrinking in size due to expansion of cultivation, urban expansion, invasive species and industrial development, including newer activities such as wind and solar farms.
The GRF will update an existing manual with current information designed to minimize further degradation and guide effective restoration of threatened Dry Mixedgrass ecosystems.
The updated and expanded manual will increase awareness of tools, AEP policies and directives, processes and strategies. This manual is of value to grassland stakeholders including land managers, reclamation practitioners, regulators, and planners to improve restoration outcomes.
It is also used in the Medicine Hat College reclamation curriculum to train the stewards of tomorrow. This manual will be of value throughout the Dry Mixedgrass Natural Subregion of southern Alberta, where native grasslands provide habitat for most of Alberta’s species at risk.
