Are you a building owner looking for a way to help Edmonton advance into the low carbon future while finding opportunities to save you money? The City of Edmonton’s Building Energy Benchmarking (BEB) Program, now in Year 4, is a program you should look at participating in.

Although there is a good understanding of the carbon footprint of buildings on the aggregate, there is a significant lack of transparent data on individual building energy performance. A first step to taking action is understanding the baseline to identify opportunities for action. To this end, Edmonton’s first in market voluntary energy benchmarking program adds an innovative auditing rebate, helping building owners identify opportunities for specific energy efficiency improvements applicable to their buildings.

Alberta Ecotrust’s Climate Innovation Fund Program Framework focus area, Building Better and Retrofitting Wiser is aligned with the BEB Program principles, and advocates for a faster local energy transition.

The building sector in Edmonton emitted 11,033,667 tonnes in 2019, over 60 per cent of Edmonton emissions profile (from City of Edmonton 2019 Greenhouse Gas Inventory). The transformation of our real estate sector into a low carbon, high performing building stock that attracts talent and increases affordability for businesses to locate and operate in Edmonton is critical to our prosperity and the goals of the recently City Council passed City Plan.
