Alberta’s public lands are important for conservation values and provide a diversity of recreational opportunities that significantly improve our quality of life. Strong policies and legislation are critical to the conservation of these places and the recreational activities people love. This project addresses the policy, people, and practice of land use and sustainable recreation. In order to create strong public land policy, Albertans need to be engaged in public land management.

CPAWS Southern Alberta’s overall approach focuses on three key areas that will help cause public policy change:

  1. Engage in the development of key recreation legislation and policy pieces;
  2. Work with all levels of government to influence the alignment and outcomes of the key pieces of legislation and policy;
  3. Engage key partners, stakeholders, and the Alberta public in supporting strong conservation and sustainable recreation in Alberta’s parks and public lands.

By taking this three-pronged approach, CPAWS Southern Alberta will be engaging in public policy broadly and in specific key areas. They will also be working at both the grassroots level of public engagement, and all levels of government. An engaged, informed and vocal constituency will hold all land users to account and spur effective lands use and sustainable recreation.
