The increasing recognition of Indigenous rights, culture and connection to the land has profoundly affected conservation initiatives and our understanding of the importance of Indigenous leadership in the conservation of lands and waters. As a land trust working on the traditional territories of many Indigenous Nations across Canada, the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) has both a responsibility and a unique opportunity to support and learn from Indigenous Peoples to create new pathways toward thriving ecosystems and communities. To further this work in Alberta, NCC is working to accelerate our ability to facilitate Indigenous reconnection to the land and amplify the application of Indigenous Knowledge in its work—particularly in regard to Indigenous Cultural and Ancestral Sites on NCC conservation properties.
