Frog Lake First Nation
Circular Economy
Frog Lake First Nations (FLFNs) and its partners worked collaboratively with the community, including knowledge keepers, Elders, youth, women and 2SLGBTQQIA+ members, to develop a Food Sovereignty Strategy. FLFNs members have indicated food sovereignty is an important undercurrent to address as FLFNs seeks to reinvent its economy as one that is circular and sustainable for generations to come. Deliberate and coordinated efforts were made to revitalize FLFNs' traditional food economy, ramp up local, sustainable food production, remediate environmental deficiencies and more.
Frog Lake First Nations (FLFNs) successfully developed its Food Sovereignty Strategy, which is the first step in scaling social innovation and behavioural change with respect to food security in the community. The strategy provides realistic programming and initiatives that will shift FLFNs away from reliance on colonial-imposed market foods, reduce waste, energy consumption and emissions and foster traditional knowledge and sustainability. The strategy positively impacts the Nation by laying the groundwork for working towards food sovereignty by using both traditional and Western knowledge, as described in the strategy. The project's outcome of developing the strategy was met.
The next steps are to find and apply for grants and funding opportunities that are appropriate for the programming and initiatives outlined in the strategy. Implementing low-hanging fruit will initiate momentum on this work and begin to benefit community members in a more tangible way. Providing funding that will help implement what is outlined in the strategy will immensely help move this work forward and support Frog Lake First Nations in working towards food sovereignty.
