In April 2021, Edmonton’s City Council approved the Community Energy Transition Strategy and Action Plan that would help achieve the accelerated and ambitious energy transition targets established by Edmonton’s City Plan. In particular, the plan identifies a bold and transformative pathway, Low Carbon City and Transportation, that would put city-wide zero-emission charging stations, zero-emission transit system and fleet and active transportation as the key implementation solutions to achieve reductions in Edmonton’s carbon footprint.

As electric options become more widely available for light-duty vehicles (LDV), the City is preparing for these opportunities and the potential challenges of infrastructure upgrades that will be needed. This research project explored infrastructure to support this transition, assessed administrative and regulatory barriers, identified potential significant operational constraints and challenges, and developed conceptual costs for scenarios and options to support the transition to electric vehicles in the City’s light-duty municipal fleet.
